Identification

Confidence: low

Eviota sigillata has been described from the St. Brandon Shoals in the western Indian Ocean but there are no images of living or freshly caught specimens from that location to define what it looks like underwater. The Philippine specimens look like Figure 10 in the description of Eviota shimadai but Dr. Dave Greenfield told me that is now considered incorrect. Instead he indicated that the Philippine images most closely resemble what E. sigillata is believed to look like. Until the characteristics of the species at the type location is properly defined, I will refer to the Philippine population as E. cf. sigillata.

Distribution

Indo-West Pacific

Described from St. Brandon Shoals, south of Raphael Islands, western Indian Ocean. Madagascar and Seychelles east to New Ireland (Papua New Guinea), north to Caroline Islands, south to northern Australia.
