This species has some intra-specific variation but it is sufficiently distinct to allow reliable identification. While diving, the thin white vertical bar wedged between two wide dark bars is an easy visual clue.


Indian Ocean and Western Pacific

Described from the Cuyo Archipelago, Philippines. Aldabra and the Seychelles, eastward to Ponape, Caroline Islands, northward to Taiwan and southward to Papua New Guinea and Northwest Cape (Western Australia).
