Identification

Confidence: high (but opinions differ)

In 1974 Ida & Moyer described Apogon ishigakiensis from the Ryukyu Islands. Catalog of Fishes currently (Apr 10, 2023) considers it valid as Ostorhinchus ishigakiensis. But in 1999 Kuiter & Kozawa suggested it is a junior synonym of O. hoevenii and still treat it as such in their 2019 edition of Cardinal Fishes of the World. Randall compared the type specimens of O. ishigakiensis and O. hoevenii and concluded they are indeed similar but further work is needed. Based on a personal communication from Dr. Rudie Kuiter I treat all sightings in Dauin as O. hoevenii. With this caveat, O. hoevenii is visually distinct and can be readily identified by its appearance.
